TFC on verge of Champions League

1:43 PM ETBy John F. Molinaro, CBC SportsDownload ( 'http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/" ) Flash Player to view this content.

It's the biggest night in the history of Toronto FC.

Success in Major League Soccer has yet to come for the Reds, who have failed to make the playoffs since entering the league in 2007.

But despite its failures on the domestic front, TFC is on the verge of clinching a historic berth in the CONCACAF Champions League and rubbing shoulders with the elite in North American club soccer.

Toronto posted a 1-0 win over Club Deportivo Motagua at home last week in the opener of its CONCACAF Champions League qualifier. A tie or victory in Tuesday's second leg, in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa, would see the Reds qualify for the tournament.

TFC's travel woes

The road to Honduras has been a rocky one for Toronto FC.

The team's charter flight was scheduled to land Monday in Tegucigalpa, site of the MLS squad's CONCACAF Champions League game against Motagua on Tuesday night.

Instead the pilot flew to San Pedro Sula after deeming that airport safer for landing, and the players were then loaded onto a bus for the winding five-hour drive to the Honduran capital.

Team officials said the squad would also depart from San Pedro Sula.

Toronto's road trip had a less-than-auspicious beginning when the team's luggage went missing on its first stop in Kansas City. The luggage showed up a couple of hours before kickoff, and Toronto went on to lose 1-0 to the Wizards on Saturday.

Torres says he plans to stay at Liverpool

Spain striker Fernando Torres announced Tuesday he will stay at Liverpool following talks with club manager Roy Hodgson.

Torres and midfielder Steven Gerrard were thought to be considering moves away from Anfield amid uncertainty over the club's financial situation and its failure to qualify for this season's Champions League, but Torres has now followed his captain in committing himself to the club.

The striker has three years left on his contract but was rumoured to be a big-money target for Manchester City and Chelsea.

"This is the best club in the country so the targets and expectations are always high," Torres said. "It was difficult last season but we are sure we can improve this season. I am really happy to be back, really happy to stay with all my teammates.

"My commitment and loyalty to the club and to the fans is the same as it was on my first day when I signed."

Torres has scored 56 goals in 79 matches in three seasons at Liverpool, including 40 in 41 at Anfield, to become a firm favourite with fans.

British papers reported that Chelsea and City were both prepared to pay far in excess of the $33.1 million Cdn Liverpool paid Atletico Madrid for him in June 2007.

Torres said Hodgson, who replaced Rafa Benitez last month after guiding unfashionable Fulham to the Europa League final, had convinced him to stay by visiting him soon after he appeared in Spain's 1-0 World Cup final win over the Netherlands on July 11.

"I really appreciated the fact that Roy came out to see me while I was on my holidays," Torres said.

"He told me about his plans for the club and what he wanted from me and I appreciated that. I hope he will be the right man to reach the targets of Liverpool Football Club and I am really looking forward to working with him."

Bayern's Arjen Robben out for 2 months

Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben is expected to miss the first two months of the German league season. (Daniel Maure/Associated Press)

Bayern Munich's Dutch star Arjen Robben will be out for about two months with a thigh injury.

Bayern said on Tuesday that Robben had a torn muscle in his left thigh, the same injury he had before the World Cup that apparently never healed properly.

The latest setback means Robben will not be available for the start of the Bundesliga on Aug. 20 and is likely to miss the opening round of the Champions League on Sept. 14-15.

"It's a shock," Robben said.

The 26-year-old winger said he was "just as surprised" as the club by the scope of the injury and the long break.

Robben returned to the club on Monday from a vacation following the World Cup and underwent a routine medical check, where the injury was diagnosed.

"It's a substantial injury," Bayern's doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt told Bild newspaper. "It was irresponsible that it had not been more precisely diagnosed in the Dutch national team and that they allowed him to play at the World Cup. I'd offered an examination several times but it was not taken."

Robben suffered a left hamstring injury shortly before the World Cup. He missed the Netherlands' first two games and made his debut in the last group game. The Dutch went all the way to the final, losing 1-0 to Spain after extra time.

During the tournament, Robben had said that the injury had not healed 100 per cent, but upon his return to Munich, he said he had felt good.

"I played four World Cup games and went through 120 minutes in the final. After the final I felt no pain and that's why I went on vacation."

Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he wanted some explanations from the Dutch football federation and was asking FIFA to intervene.

"We are not only disappointed, but very angry as well," Rummenigge said.

Robben was Bayern's top scorer in the Bundesliga last season with 16 goals. Bayern won the domestic double and was runner-up in the Champions League, losing 2-0 to Inter Milan in the final.

Teams punished for unruly World Cup final

9:13 AM ETThe Associated Press

The Netherlands and Spain have been fined by FIFA for lack of discipline in a bad-tempered World Cup final.

FIFA said Tuesday the Dutch federation must pay 15,000 Swiss francs ($14,825 Cdn) after eight different players received yellow cards, and defender John Heitinga was booked a second time and sent off.

English referee Howard Webb showed five yellow cards to Spain, earning its federation a 10,000-Swiss-franc ($9,885 Cdn) fine.

FIFA's disciplinary code has a clause on team misconduct calling for a federation to be fined when at least five of its players are sanctioned in a match.

Spain won 1-0 in the July 11 final in Johannesburg, on Andres Iniesta's extra-time goal after the Netherlands were reduced to 10 players.

The match set a record for most cards received in a World Cup final, beating the six yellows shown when Argentina beat West Germany 3-2 in the 1986 final.

The final also was the worst behaved of the 64 matches played in South Africa. Chile and Switzerland players combined for nine yellows and a straight red card in a group-stage game.

FIFA paid Spain $30 million US in prize money for winning the tournament, and the Netherlands was awarded $24 million as runner-up.

U.S. soccer stalwart Mathis to retire

Clint Mathis, seen competing against David Beckham in last year's MLS championship game, has been a league and U.S. national team staple. (Harry How/Getty Images)

Clint Mathis will retire from soccer this weekend, according to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The MLS club said Tuesday that the 33-year-old midfielder will end his 11-year Major League Soccer career after Saturday's exhibition against Real Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Mathis began his career with the Galaxy in 1998, the first of three stints he had with the team. He left in 2000, then returned briefly following the end of the 2007 MLS season, and was reacquired from Real Salt Lake in January.

Mathis played for the U.S. national team in the 2002 World Cup, when his left-footed goal gave the Americans a 1-1 tie with host South Korea and helped them reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1930.

He made 46 appearances for the U.S., all under coach Bruce Arena.

Mathis also played for New York and Colorado, and had stints in Germany and Greece.

Canadian keeper Onstad to have surgery

Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday in Germany to repair bilateral abdominal strains.

Team spokesman Lester Gretsch said the Canadian keeper should return to action 10-to-20 days after the procedure. Gretsch said Onstad flew overseas to meet with a doctor who specializes in the type of surgery the goalkeeper needs.

Onstad, the oldest active player in Major League Soccer, has missed three Superliga games and two MLS games due to the injury.

The 42-year-old from Vancouver is the league's career leader in goals against average (1.05). He topped MLS with 13 victories in 2009 and earned 10 shutouts.

Onstad has 57 caps for Canada.

TFC earns 1st Champions League berth

Toronto FC has made history.

Two second-half goals lifted the soccer club to a 2-2 tie with Club Deportivo Motagua on Tuesday night in Honduras, earning Toronto its first-ever berth in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Captain Dwayne De Rosario scored in the 59th minute and Chad Barrett added the second goal in the 79th, silencing the crowd in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.

After beating Motagua 1-0 at home last week in the first of the home-and-home series, Toronto wins the aggregate series by a cumulative score of 3-2.

The series win means Toronto is one of 16 teams competing in the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League, which features the best clubs from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

TFC will be in a first-round group with reigning Major League Soccer champions Real Salt Lake, Panama's Arabe Unido and Mexico's Cruz Azul.

Travel trouble

Toronto FC's charter flight was scheduled to land in the Honduran capital on Monday, but instead flew to San Pedro Sula, which was deemed safer for landing.

It was also a five-hour, winding bus ride away from the capital city, which played host to their game Tuesday.

The road trip didn't start off well, either.

The luggage got lost when the team stopped in Kansas City to play the Wizards.

TFC went on to lose 1-0 to Kansas City on Saturday.

The top two teams in each of the four round-robin groups advance to the quarter-finals, with the eventual winner of the CONCACAF Champions League advancing to the 2011 FIFA World Club Cup, played by champions from all six continental soccer confederations.

Former TFC midfielder Amato Guevara was nearly the spoiler for his old club Tuesday night.

The Motagua forward scored two goals and was a constant threat, getting his team going with a diving header to make it 1-0 in the sixth minute and adding his second in the 64th for a 2-1 lead.

Motagua had most of the scoring chances in the match, firing nine shots on Toronto keeper Stefan Frei compared to only two from TFC. The Honduran side had three shots and a 1-0 lead after the opening half and was carrying the momentum headed into the second.

But Toronto made good on its only two shots of the game. Maicon fed De Rosario a perfect through ball, and the captain fired it in the bottom right corner to tie the game at 1-1.

Later in the half, after Guevara drilled his second of the game into the top left corner, Barrett had the equalizer for Toronto, a deflected shot that got by goalkeeper Donaldo Morales.

Barrett also had the lone goal in Toronto's home victory against Motagua last week.

Tuesday's match was Toronto's fourth in 11 days. The squad returns to MLS action Saturday, when it hosts Chivas USA.

The struggles of both the Boston Breakers and Atlanta Beat seem to be long in the rear-view mirror. Boston, after winning its opening match, suffered through a nine-game winless streak; Atlanta didn't win a match for its first seven contests, and only won a single game in its first 12.

On Wednesday night at Harvard Stadium in Allston, Mass., the Breakers and Beat meet with playoff position at stake.

Boston is coming off a 5-1 month of July which has skyrocketed them up into third place in Women's Professional Soccer. Meanwhile, the Beat are on a 3-0-1 stretch where the defense has recorded three shutouts. While they sit in a tie for last with the Washington Freedom, Atlanta is just three points shy of a playoff spot.

Atlanta is coming off a scoreless draw against the league-leading Gold Pride. Beat coach Gareth O'Sullivan is happy with the team's performance of late and doesn't want things to change when taking on the Breakers.

"We need to continue creating chances and executing our game plan," said O'Sullivan. "Confidence is high going into Boston."

In the only other meeting between the two clubs, Atlanta took a 1-0 lead into halftime on the road, but the Breakers scored three goals in a five-minute span in the second half to propel them to a 3-1 victory on July 11.

"That five minute spell won’t happen again," said O'Sullivan.

Jordan Angeli's recent string of goals began in that match against Atlanta. But still, O'Sullivan feels it's another Breaker, Kelly Smith, who "is a handful," and of higher priority for his defense.

Breakers coach Tony DiCicco knows that game wasn't a true indication of the two sides. Both teams were missing players and he feels Atlanta is more dangerous now.

"Atlanta  is coming together and is a dangerous team with a deep bench," DiCicco said. "We have to continue to play good team defense and also counter-attack from good defense.

"They can come from set pieces or from our play during the flow of the game," DiCicco added of the threats Atlanta poses. "They also have (keeper) Hope (Solo) and (defender) Tina (Ellertson) and a good cast of defenders so it won’t be easy."

For Boston, Liz Bogus remains out with an injury, while DiCicco points out that Sarah Walsh is on her way back to full health, though she won't be in the lineup. Atlanta has its full roster healthy for the contest.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

He is honest.

He is brash.

And he is passionate about soccer.

Los Angeles Futbol Club’s president Don Sheppard entered the world of youth soccer in 2002. Six years later, he was watching his top team play in the national final of the prestigious Development Academy.

Fittingly, with his confidence about his club and teams, Sheppard was ejected from the game for arguing over a foul that led to a penalty kick.

Still, he had accomplished what many believed to be unthinkable: turn a small club into one of the most powerful in less than a decade.

So how'd he do it?

"When I developed LAFC, I had three tenants," Sheppard said in a phone interview on Monday. "One, money would not hold anyone back. Two, parents couldn’t coach or be on the board of the club. Three, we would have an ABC set-up so the kids play at the right level."

He went on to explain the ABC set up: "Every year, all kids try out to play in the club. The best 16 to 18 are on the A team, the next 18 are on B and then the next 18 are on C. Everyone else doesn’t make the club. Each year we hold new tryouts."

No roster spot was guaranteed on any team in LAFC.

The idea was simple yet difficult to implement. Sheppard was bucking the pay-to-play model, investing his own money into the club, and making sure he put the best players out there.

He thought LAFC could be the first club to truly accomplish eradicating the accepted structure, and his passion for soccer in the United States made him believe it was a step in the right direction.

"The reason the U.S. isn't successful at the world stage is because the U.S. system is based on the pay-to-play (model). For most middle class players, college is their goal. That system works in America but doesn’t work to develop soccer players."

The idea is not new, but the execution of it is. He was attempting to push youth soccer to a new frontier. The concept piqued the interest of many.

"It drew everyone to LAFC," Sheppard remembers. "It is an environment that (great) coaches want to be in and attracted some of the best Hispanic talent in the area."

His dream started out as a club named Arroyo United Soccer Club. Four years later, at the beginning of the 2006 season, he changed the name to Los Angeles Futbol Club and had five teams. By the end of the season, there were 36 teams under the LAFC emblem. Fifty teams were part of the club just a season later. ("We would have had 100 teams if Coast Soccer League had allowed more than three teams per age group.")

Sheppard described how the club expanded so quickly, "The main reason was the system worked. Everyone was looking for a fair and equitable system in Southern California and we were winning. We had quality training and coaching. People really loved the fact parents couldn't coach. There was a major attraction to the idea."

The attraction, the growth, and the success all led to a very exclusive invite to the first season of the Development Academy. Sheppard said, "I think the Development Academy is one of the best moves U.S. Soccer has ever made. It is crucial for soccer's success—it can improve and expand the pool of talent."

The success of the Development Academy final appearance drew interest from global icon, Chelsea FC. Shortly thereafter, Chelsea FC and LAFC joined forces to create LAFC Chelsea; however, the name might not last for long.

"I don’t know if it will continue," Sheppard admits. "We may have out-grown (the partnership). Mainly, it was a branding exercise."

Now, with the introduction of MLS academies to the Development Academy, Sheppard knows his next action for the club—create a viable transition for his youth players into the professional game.

"We need a professional team," Sheppard said. "For those special few (players), we need an avenue for them."

He has begun talks with the NASL to bring a franchise back to Los Angeles. He believes NASL will emerge as the independent second division of U.S. Soccer professional leagues. Currently both the NASL and USL co-exist as D2 leagues in as temporary measure from U.S. Soccer; one will emerge as the lone representative at the end of the season.

The plans don’t stop there for LAFC. One of the best aspects of the club has been the ability to set up smaller leagues in economically deprived neighborhoods. Using a foundation, which Sheppard established shortly after the club, LAFC has set up a league in Watts-Willowbrook and Huntington Park—two areas untouched by organized youth soccer in this country.

Watts is a predominately African-American community where LAFC has built soccer fields and set up leagues to encourage children to play. The foundation has done the same in Huntington Park where the population is 97 percent Latino.

It is not all about soccer for Sheppard or LAFC, it is also about the education of his players. Of the players LAFC sent to college from that 2008 finalist team, he doesn’t believe there has been a single drop-out. Two of the stars of that team, Carlos Alvarez and Kevin Mejia, have been stand-outs for their college teams, UCONN and Boston College respectively. Also, both have had the opportunity to represent the U.S. national team at various youth levels.

With the success Sheppard has seen in Los Angeles, he wants to expand his mission to other cities across the country. He says he is just looking for the right financial partner to make that a reality.

By Jean-Paul Couret

PARIS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - The new Ligue 1 season gets underway this weekend with French soccer desperate for an image uplift in the aftermath of the national team’s dismal World Cup showing and off-field infighting.

France were knocked out of the tournament in South Africa in the first round following a campaign marred by a player boycott of a training session in support of striker Nicolas Anelka, who was sent home for insulting coach Raymond Domenech.

“I fear our fans are disenchanted with soccer after what happened in South Africa,” Frederic Thiriez, president of the French Football League (LFP), told Reuters after a pre-season meeting with Ligue 1 coaches and referees.

“It was a moral disaster and its repercussions could be serious on professional and amateur football. It could lead to a drop in the number of club members, a drop in attendances, a drop in television audiences, and a drop in income,” he added.

“We must react urgently to put French soccer on its feet again. There are two ways to do it: produce a good show and go back to the real spirit and values of the game.”

The curtain-raiser to the season last weekend, the French Champions Trophy clash in Tunisia between champions Olympique Marseille and Cup winners Paris St Germain, failed to provide the spark Thiriez had hoped with Marseille winning a shootout after a dreary goalless draw in front of 50,000 bored fans.

At least the result enabled Marseille, who host Caen in their league opener on Saturday, to keep the momentum that helped them end an 18-year wait for the French title and lift their first major trophy since they won the Champions League in 1993.

FLAT MARKET

Nothing much has changed at the Stade Velodrome during the summer break, good news for the club after coach Didier Deschamps extended his contract until June 2012 after refusing an offer from Liverpool.

He has so far managed to keep striker Mamadou Niang, top-scorer in Ligue 1 last season with 18 goals, playmaker Lucho Gonzalez and Souleymanne Diawara, the anchorman of the defence.

Deschamps has been quoted as saying he wants to sign a top class striker and a defensive midfielder but has been hampered by a lack of buying power.

With a budget of 105 million euros, Marseille cannot compete for the world’s best talent, unlike European powerhouses Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona or Chelsea.

Olympique Lyon, the most powerful French club of the decade, boast a 150 million euro budget but chairman Jean-Michel Aulas said he only had 25 million to spend and the only recruit so far has been Stade Rennes striker Jimmy Briand for 6 million euros.

Lyon, second last season after a strong finish, are hopeful of regaining a title they won seven times in a row before Girondins Bordeaux ended that run in 2008-09.

“We are going to build a team strong enough to win back the title but because of the economic crisis we must be careful,” Aulas told reporters. Lyon are at home to Monaco on Saturday.

Bordeaux, away at Montpellier on Sunday, will begin life under Jean Tigana who has taken over from new France coach Laurent Blanc.

A poor second half of the season cost Bordeaux a European place and they must now do without key striker Marouane Chamakh who has joined Arsenal.

SANTIAGO, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Guadalajara recorded a stunning 2-0 away win over Universidad de Chile on Tuesday to reach the Libertadores Cup final for the first time.

Xavier Baez and Jonny Magallon scored in each half of the semi-final second leg to give the Chivas a 3-1 aggregate win as they made the most of a goodwill gesture to invite them into South America’s top club tournament.

They became only the second Mexican team to reach the final since the country’s clubs were first invited to take part in 1998.

Last year, Guadalajara and fellow Mexicans San Luis withdrew from the tournament when their opponents declined to travel to Mexico for second round matches because of the H1N1 flu outbreak.

The Mexican Football Federation angrily announced their teams would not take part in future but the row was quickly patched up and the two teams were given automatic places in the last 16 of this year’s tournament as compensation.

As a result, Guadalajara, beaten semi-finalists in 2005 and 2006, needed only six matches the reach the final.

Universidad de Chile started the match as favourites after their 1-1 away draw last week but left too many gaps at the back as they threw players forward.

The warning signs were evident when Guadalajara striker Omar Bravo had two chances to score in the first five minutes.

The Chivas, who field only Mexican players, went ahead in the 22nd minute when Baez scored with a long-range shot.

Jose Contreras and Rafael Olarra hit the bar for the Chileans in a three-minute spell before the break but it was Guadalajara who struck again when defender Magallon headed their second goal seven minutes after halftime. TOKYO, Aug 4 (Reuters) - The J-League’s decision to pull the plug on this season’s all-star game was logistical and not one triggered by financial trouble, the Japanese organisation said on Wednesday.

A J-League official told Reuters the failure to reach an agreement with sponsors for the annual match had more to do with scheduling problems after this year’s World Cup finals.

“It’s not so much about the economic situation,” J-League media officer Rina Iwamoto said. “The schedule was very tight after the World Cup.

“We couldn’t find a date to agree with sponsors. We’re negotiating to play the fixture next year but at the moment nothing has been decided.”

Japanese sport has been hit hard by the global financial crisis over the past couple of years, particularly in motorsport with Toyota and Honda quitting Formula One to cut costs.

Subaru, Suzuki and Kawasaki have also pulled out of motorsport, while local soccer, rugby, basketball and ice hockey have all felt the economic pinch.

Debt-ridden soccer club Oita Trinita were bailed out by the J-League after being on the brink of bankruptcy while the future of once-mighty Tokyo Verdy remains under threat.

But Iwamoto insisted the J-League itself had not suffered from the financial crisis.

“So far this season average attendances are 19,296—which is slightly higher than last year,” she said. “The J-League works hard to keep itself (profitable).

“Oita’s local municipal and prefectural administrations are working hard to help pay back the J-League ($7 million) loan and we remain hopeful Verdy can find sponsors for next season.”

The J-League scrapped its all-star game on Tuesday for the first time since Japan’s professional league was launched in 1993 but is hoping to bring the fixture back next season.

The J-League has played a select eleven from Asian neighbour South Korea’s K-League for the past two years. (Reporting by Alastair Himmer. Editing by John O’Brien; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback

By Steve Keating

TORONTO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Inter Milan coach Rafael Benitez’s past returned to haunt him as his side lost 3-2 to Panathinaikos in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday, but the Spaniard preferred to focus on the challenges ahead rather than dwell on defeat.

Two goals from striker Djibril Cisse and one from winger Sebastian Leto, both sold by Benitez when he was in charge of Liverpool, were enough to give the Greek double winners a well deserved win over Europe’s top team from last season.

However, the loss in his second game in charge since leaving Merseyside for the Italian giants was hardly unexpected for a man charged with filling a huge void left by departed coach Jose Mourinho.

“I expected this behaviour tonight,” Benitez told reporters after following up Sunday’s 3-0 friendly win over big-spending Manchester City with a disappointing display.

“There are going to be highs and lows because this is the beginning of the season.

“We played too long and too wide and it was easy for them to play.”

Inter won a domestic double and the Champions League under Mourinho last season before the Portuguese moved on to Spain’s Real Madrid but Benitez was quick to point out that he has inherited a side he feels will challenge again for more honours.

“We have the opportunities to win trophies… a lot of them,” Benitez added. “That is the challenge and I’m pleased to be in this situation and we will try to win as much as we can.”

Goals from Samuel Eto’o and Coutinho gave the scoreline a flattering look but the absence of Mario Balotelli for a second straight game, would suggest the young striker’s expected move to Manchester City was imminent despite Benitez’s view of events.

“I have no news, everything is like it is before,” Benitez said when asked about the 19-year-old striker.

After a northern hemisphere summer that has seen a parade of European teams march through the city, Toronto appeared to be suffering from friendly fatigue with a crowd of 17,169 sprinkled through the Rogers Centre on hot, muggy evening.

Like Manchester United, who passed through Toronto in July, Inter Milan is an international sporting brand both teams using their North American tours as much for marketing purposes as training. (Editing by John O’Brien; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback

As Rafael Marquez prepares to embark on a new adventure in the United States, Goal.com looks back at five of his best moments in a Barcelona jersey.

Between arriving at Camp Nou from Monaco in 2003 and departing for New York today, Rafa has played well over 200 games for the Blaugrana, winning four league titles, two Champions Leagues, and a lot more besides.

But what exactly were the most sparkling times for Rafa?

5. Clasico at Camp Nou, November 2004

That night in Camp Nou Barcelona displayed a supreme performance to defeat arch-rivals Real Madrid 3-0. The Blaugrana would go on to win the Spanish Primera Division title that season for the first time since 1999 and that win over los Blancos was massively encouraging.

Madrid rarely asked questions of Barca's defense that night and much was down due to Rafael Marquez's solid performance. Luis Figo, Raul, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Roberto Carlos and David Beckham all started but all were blocked by a defense marshaled by the Mexican.

4. Club America in the FIFA Club World Cup, Dec. 2006

Don Garber has signed a contract extension that will keep him in his Major League Soccer commissioner role until 2014.

Commissioner since 1999, Garber previously worked for the NFL. In his decade at the helm of MLS, the 52-year-old has brought the league from the brink of contraction (the loss of both Florida clubs in 2002) to heavy expansion (Montreal will join as the league's 19th team in 2012), added a highly lucrative marketing arm in S.U.M., instituted the designated player rule, and overseen a push to add soccer-specific stadia across the United States.

“Don’s done a phenomenal job and we’re really proud of him,” Tim Leiweke, the CEO of AEG and chairman of MLS's board of governors, which negotiated Garber's contract, told the Sports Business Journal. “The momentum he's created here is phenomenal. We want to keep this going. I can't imagine anyone leading the charge but Don Garber.”

The Sports Business Journal understands Garber's contract could reach over $3 million a year with incentives and performance goals.

Though extension processes began over a year ago, Garber's deal was delayed until after the successful negotiation of a new collective bargaining agreement for the players, which was reached at the last moment following a deadline extension and a threat of strike by the players in June.

“My expectation is this is not the last time we'll negotiate with Don Garber,” Leiweke said. “He's like a good life insurance policy that builds up a significant cash value as time goes on.”

Goalkeeper

Jon Busch, San Jose Earthquakes: The 'Quakes may have lost 1-0, but had it not been for the goalkeeping heroics of Jon Busch, the scoreline could have been much worse. He made a number of solid saves, including one on his own defender as he kept the scoreline respectable in a match where the rest of the San Jose side was completely lifeless.

Defenders

Carlos Borja, Chivas USA: The young full back played an important role in both attack and defense and notched a deserved goal with an impeccable finish in just his second MLS start.

Jamison Olave, Real Salt Lake: Olave was once again a rock in the Real Salt Lake defense that shut out D.C. United at the weekend. With the attacking flair that Salt Lake exhibited throughout the match, Olave provided the security at the back.

Patrick Ianni, Seattle Sounders FC: He was at the heart of a Sounders defense that limited San Jose to just two shots on goal and caught the home side offside eight times. With this kind of display, it is no wonder that Seattle have conceded only two goals in their last six competitive matches.

Roger Espinoza, Kansas City Wizards: Espinoza played a solid game in helping the Wizards keep a clean sheet against visiting Toronto FC. His distribution was excellent and he was resolute in defense.

Midfielders

Landon Donovan, LA Galaxy: Landon Donovan's two penalty goals helped the Galaxy in their attempt to come back from three goals down, and although they fell just short, the brace takes Donovan's MLS goal total to 101 goals, becoming just the sixth player to surpass the century mark. Although he certainly earned his way onto the team of the week through his contributions on the field, his rare feat certainly helped his case.

Blair Gavin, Chivas USA: Gavin put in a nearly impeccable performance in the midfield as Chivas USA upset the Eastern Conference-leading Columbus Crew. His passing and work rate were impressive and on top of that he capitalized on a mistake from Crew rookie Shaun Francis to notch what would eventually be the winner.

SYDNEY, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Caretaker Australia coach Han Berger has named Everton midfielder Tim Cahill and Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer for Australia’s first international since the World Cup against Slovenia in Ljubljana next week.

Thirteen of Berger’s 20-man squad for the friendly against fellow World Cup qualifiers Slovenia represented Australia at the finals in South Africa as the Dutchman, recently promoted from technical director, stuck to an entirely overseas-based squad.

Nathan Burns receives his first Socceroos call-up since being selected for a friendly in Singapore in 2008 after impressing for AEK Athens in the pre-season. Bruce Djite and Jon McKain return to the squad named on Tuesday for the first time since March.

SYDNEY (AP)—Captain Lucas Neill and Everton midfielder Tim Cahill were among 13 World Cup players included Tuesday in Australia’s 20-man squad for an Aug. 11 international friendly against Slovenia at Ljubljana.

Australia had a win, a loss and a draw at South Africa 2010 and was eliminated in the first round, with Germany and Ghana going through from the group.

Veteran Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, Brett Holman and Luke Wilkshire were also among the players retained from the World Cup squad, but strikers Harry Kewell and Josh Kennedy were not selected.

Australia is using the match to build up for the Asian Cup at Qatar in January. Slovenia was eliminated in first round at the World Cup, finishing behind England and the United States in Group C.

Bruce Djite and Jon McKain return to the Australian squad following selection in the Asian Cup qualifiers, while Nathan Burns was called up for national duties after his performances for AEK Athens in a friendly tournament in Sydney last week.

Australia squad: Nathan Burns, Tim Cahill, David Carney, Bruce Djite, Adam Federici, Richard Garcia, James Holland, Brett Holman, Mile Jedinak, Shane Lowry, Mark Milligan, Jon McKain, Lucas Neill, Jade North, Thomas Oar, Nikita Rukavytsya, Mark Schwarzer, Carl Valeri, Dario Vidosic, Luke Wilkshire.

SANTIAGO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Argentine Marcelo Bielsa, who in June led Chile to their first win at a World Cup for 48 years, has agreed to stay on as their coach for another five years.

“Marcelo Bielsa will keep working with us until 2015,” Chilean Football Federation president Harold Mayne-Nicholls told reporters.

“We have reached a full agreement which has been ratified by the directors. He is very satisfied by this agreement and so are we. We have fully agreed with all the demands he has made to continue this job.”

The eccentric Argentine took over as Chile coach in 2007 with the team in a shambolic state.

He rebuilt the side with a group of little-known but talented youngsters, successfully managing to implement an attacking game similar to the style he employed when he was coach of his native Argentina.

Under Bielsa’s leadership, Chile qualified for their first World Cup since 1998, finishing second behind Brazil in the 10-team South American group and recording their first competitive win over Argentina in the process.

At the World Cup itself, Chile, fielding one of the youngest teams at the tournament, beat Honduras and Switzerland, their first wins at the finals since 1962, to reach the last 16, before losing 3-0 to Brazil.

Bielsa’s new contract will include next year’s Copa America in Argentina, the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the tournament itself—if Chile qualify—and the 2015 Copa America.

If he sees through the contract, Bielsa, who became Chile’s sixth coach in as many years when he was appointed, will have been at the helm for eight years.

Goal.Commentary: Why Rafael Marquez Is The Perfect Signing For The Red Bulls (Goal.com)

The transgressions of Rafa Marquez - the headbutt to Cobi Jones in Jeonju and the midair stomping of Tim Howard in Columbus - will forever be ingrained in the minds of U.S. supporters.

These moments, along with his 13-year tenure as the face of the Mexican national team have both Red Bull fans and MLS enthusiasts apprehensive towards his signing in New York. This quandary of allegiances is specific to lovers of our sport, where club hostilities overlap with national pride and vice versa.

How does a fan react when a player who has long been their national team’s prime enemy sign with their club? Red Bull fans, long tortured, should receive a player once considered a villain as the fabulous player that he is.

Those aforementioned moments aside, Marquez is simply a perfect signing for Major League Soccer. At the age of 31, the captain of El Tri has the chance to change the fortunes of a club, both on and off the field, immediately and in the future.

With 163 appearances for Barcelona and 94 caps for Mexico, Marquez’s resume speaks for itself. He has had the most illustrious career of any CONCACAF player during this young century, or ever if you neglect his former manager Hugo Sanchez. Rarely does a player of this pedigree arrive in MLS, let alone at the age of 31.

But the above only acknowledges the past and not how El Kaiser can affect the resurgent Red Bulls on the pitch. With the signing of Thierry Henry, Hans Backe and Erik Soler looked poised to satiate Red Bulls supporters’ crave for a playmaker with the signing of a classic No. 10.

Beckham will not return on loan to AC Milan: Allegri

David Beckham, shown in this file photo, watched Milan draw 1-1 at Arsenal in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. (Kirsty Wigglesworth/Associated Press)

AC Milan coach Massimo Allegri says David Beckham will not return for a third spell at the Italian club.

Beckham watched Milan draw 1-1 at Arsenal in a pre-season friendly on Saturday but Allegri says that does not mean the one-time England captain will rejoin his former teammates on the field.

Beckham is contracted to the Los Angeles Galaxy but has twice gone on loan to Milan to stay fit during Major League Soccer's off-season.

The 35-year-old Beckham is recovering from the ruptured Achilles' tendon that prevented him from appearing at a fourth World Cup this year.

Asked if Beckham will return, Allegri said: "I don't think so. He is now recovering from a very bad injury and at that age I think it is very difficult to come back."

Red Bulls' Angel wins MLS weekly honour

2:59 PM ETBy John F. Molinaro, CBC Sports

New York Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel was named Major League Soccer's player of the week on Monday.

The Colombian earned the honour after scoring both goals in the Red Bulls' 2-2 draw against the hometown Houston Dynamo on Saturday.

Angel gave his team a one-goal advantage, scoring in the 10th minute on a set-up from new teammate Thierry Henry.

With the game tied 1-1, Angel and Henry again connected in the 58th minute. Henry fed a pass into the middle for Angel, who took one touch before delivering a right-footed shot into the back of the net.

With 11 goals this season, Angel currently sits in second place in goal-scoring race, just one goal behind the Edson Buddle of the L.A. Galaxy.

This is Angel's second player of the week award this season, and the fifth of his MLS career.

FIFA gives Iraq soccer leaders extra year in office

9:54 AM ETThe Associated Press

FIFA has given Iraq soccer officials an extra year in office to prepare for elections, after a sectarian dispute meant the federation missed a deadline to vote for new leaders.

Monday's decision lifts the threat of Iraq being suspended from world soccer and allows the national team to prepare to defend its Asian Cup title next January.

"This is the best solution to be adopted," Iraqi Football Association secretary general Tariq Ahmed told the Associated Press. "We have many activities to take part in. If sanctions had been taken, all these rights will be gone."

Villarreal signs defender Marchena

9:51 AM ETThe Associated Press

Villarreal has signed defender Carlos Marchena from Valencia to a three-year deal.

The 31-year-old Marchena, who can also play defensive midfielder, was part of Spain's winning World Cup squad and was also a key player during its 2008 European Championship run.

Spain hasn't lost in a record 55 games with Marchena in the lineup. He has made 62 appearances for Spain.

The former Sevilla player helped Valencia to a Spanish league-UEFA Cup double in 2004 and the Copa del Rey trophy in 2008.

Marchena joins David Villa and David Silva, now with Barcelona and Manchester City, respectively, in leaving a debt-troubled Valencia this off-season.

A person familiar with the situation said Monday that Kenny Huang is in talks with Royal Bank of Scotland. The person was not authorized to talk to the media and spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press.

American co-owners Hicks and Gillett bought Liverpool three years ago but have put it up for sale after a public fallout over the running of the club.

Huang, who is co-chair of both the National Basketball League of China and Chinese Baseball League, has made no announcement but has appointed a British media relations firm to represent him "in respect of his interest" in the Liverpool team.

Huang was the first Chinese college graduate from mainland China to work at the New York Stock Exchange, in 1988. He negotiated the purchase of a 15 per cent stake in the NBA's Cavaliers in May 2009 and is director and co-founder of SportsCorp China, the New York Yankees' exclusive marketing partner in China.

Huang was first linked to a takeover of the 18-time English champions two years ago. The purchase of the debt would not make him the club owner but would give him great influence over Hicks and Gillett.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson said last month he wants the uncertainty resolved as soon as possible, giving him time to bring in new players before the transfer window closes Aug. 31. There is no set deadline for the talks with the bank.

Hicks and Gillett bought Liverpool in February 2007 for what was then $431 million in a leveraged takeover. The club lost $23.5 million before tax last season, a steep drop from a healthy profit the previous year. But the Americans still value it at $948 million.

Hicks and Gillett promised to build a 60,000-seat stadium to help the club compete financially with Manchester United and Arsenal, but construction was halted in August 2008 because of the global economic crisis.

Manchester United's Old Trafford holds 76,000 fans and Arsenal moved from 38,000-seat Highbury into the 60,000-seat Emirates Stadium in 2006.

Rafael Marquez signs with Red Bulls

The New York Red Bulls continue to load up their roster with experienced international players.

FC Barcelona star and Mexican national team captain Rafael Marquez signed a multi-year contract as New York's third designated player on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Marquez's arrival in New York comes just over two weeks after the MLS club inked French striker Thierry Henry to a designated-player contract.

MLS rules stipulate that teams can sign up to three designated players with a minimal hit to the salary cap. Colombian star Juan Pablo Angel signed with New York in 2007 as the club's original DP.

Marquez, a 31-year-old defender who can also play in midfield, was linked with New York since the conclusion of the recent World Cup in South Africa. He was released from the final two seasons of his contract with Barcelona last week.

Henry and Marquez are the latest international stars to recently join MLS. Mexican forward Nery Castillo signed with the Chicago Fire, and Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro Fernandez signed with the Seattle Sounders last week.

"I am excited to be joining the Red Bulls," Marquez said in a news release.

'Chance that I could not refuse'

"Despite having the opportunity to fulfil my contract with Barcelona, coming to New York and playing in Major League Soccer was a chance that I could not refuse.

"I am completely committed to doing my very best to help the Red Bulls in their playoff push this year and compete for championships in the years to come."

Marquez has served as captain of Mexico since 2002, earning 94 caps (with 11 goals) for his country and playing in three World Cups. He made his national team debut in 1997 and played a key role in helping Mexico win the 1999 Confederations Cup and 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

He spent the last seven seasons of his club career with Barcelona with whom he won four Spanish league championships (2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010) and Champions League titles in 2006 and 2009.

Marquez had 13 goals in 242 matches with the Catalan club

Prior to joining Barcelona, Marquez played for French side AS Monaco from 1999 to 2003.

Stars start to descend on Major League Soccer

  By Nigel Reed

The once level playing fields of North America may be gone for good. All of a sudden parity appears to be a dirty word.

The post-World Cup transfer market is in full swing and veterans of South Africa are arriving by the boatload to sign on for Major League Soccer.

Well not exactly by the boatload, but you get my drift. Some we knew about, some were long rumoured and some just popped up out of the blue. Suddenly, for some, a Designated Player is a must have, and why stop at one when you can three.

The rules have been relaxed and the once spendthrift MLS wants in. Why wouldn't it? Ratings are everything in the entertainment business and the World Cup ratings were huge. MLS in general, and its franchise owners in particular, believe it is time to board the gravy train.

New York has already lured Thierry Henry and is almost certain to add Mexico's World Cup captain Rafa Marquez following his departure from Barcelona. Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro Fernandez has landed in Seattle while former Sounder Freddie Ljungberg has joined Nery Castillo in Chicago.

Toronto FC is reportedly paying DP wages to Mista after the Spanish striker joined his former Deportivo La Coruna teammate Julian de Guzman as Canada's sole Designated Player. Blaise Nkufo is making himself comfortable in Seattle while Branko Boskovic is doing likewise in D.C.

Lest we forget the league's two biggest earners. David Beckham, himself, was the first to take advantage of what some initially referred to as The Beckham Rule, while Landon Donovan's new deal takes him into the stratosphere of soccer salaries.

MLS is spending big but ironically is about to lose its poster boy. The league was prepared to allow Donovan to join Everton on loan only after it signed him to a lucrative four-year deal. His success in the EPL, coupled with an impressive World Cup, means his MLS days are almost over.

At 28 Donovan has finally emerged as the face of US soccer. His previous false starts in Europe have been forgotten and his performances in South Africa have significantly elevated his profile. In a nation, which needs a home-grown soccer hero, Donovan has delivered.

He has achieved what few imagined possible. He has matched and succeeded his ageing and ailing teammate Beckham and there is no shortage of suitors for his services. Donovan is at the peak of his career in terms of age and ability and Europe is ready to roll out the welcome mat.

There can be no doubt it is a matter of when not if Donovan departs. The European transfer window closes at the end of August and it is now merely a numbers game. When MLS agrees an acceptable figure for its biggest star, Donovan will be sold for a record fee.

Donovan has been loyal long enough. Staying true to his roots serves no purpose despite Commissioner Don Garber's forlorn wish for him to remain in MLS. Donovan, though, still has a part to play. When he's gone he can become an ambassador for the league that nurtured him.

He can sell MLS and a lifestyle choice to those searching for a fresh option, not a retirement home. Some, like Henry, didn't need much encouragement. Others need to be persuaded MLS is an attractive, viable option rather than a stone cold career killer.

In the final analysis, money talks. Few, if any, European clubs would have given Henry, who will celebrate his 33rd birthday later this month, a four-year contract. If he helps fill New York's first soccer specific stadium and brings on field success, it will be regarded as money well spent.

It is just possible we are witnessing the formative stages of MLS franchises building future dynasties. New York wants to expand in terms of fan base and silverware before Garber admits a second NYC based team - perhaps the reformed Cosmos in 2013.

Closer to home, Toronto FC is desperate to achieve something before its Canadian MLS exclusivity expires in a matter of months. Vancouver's plans are well advanced in terms of personnel and stadium preparations while, in Montreal, the Impact are hot on their heels.

The bigger the league, the tougher it becomes to be successful. The deeper the pockets, the easier it becomes to have a chance. No guarantees mind you, just a chance.

Haynesworth skips 3rd conditioning test

Updated Aug 2, 2010 10:34 PM ETASHBURN, Va. (AP)

This time, Albert Haynesworth started but had to stop.

The two-time All-Pro defensive tackle tried to take the Washington Redskins' conditioning test again Monday morning, but pulled up after three back-and-forth sprints because he felt some irritation in his left knee.

Haynesworth isn't allowed to practice until he passes the test, which consists of two timed 300-yard back-and-forth shuttle runs performed 3-1/2 minutes apart. Each back-and-forth sprint is 50 yards, so Haynesworth completed about half of the first part of the test before stopping.

''That's one of the reasons he's not out there practicing with the team,'' Coach Mike Shanahan said. ''You've got to be in certain shape to go through a practice, and that knee after three sprints back and forth couldn't go any further.''

Haynesworth failed the test on Thursday's first day of training camp after taking an extended bathroom break in the middle of it. He failed again Friday when he didn't post a sufficient time, then didn't attempt it Saturday or Sunday because his knee was sore.

Unlike previous days, when he was mostly exiled from his teammates during practice, Haynesworth for the first time looked like a regular injured player at training camp. He walked onto the field at the start of practice in his No. 92 jersey with no pads and stayed for the entire session, watching the various drills while holding a play sheet. He wore a baseball cap but also brought his helmet, which he playfully tossed in the air.

Afterward he stayed for what has become a daily ritual: a solo session with defensive coaches to walk through some of the plays.

New team for 6th A-League, star Fowler moves west (AP)

BRISBANE, Australia (AP)—The sixth edition of Australia’s A-League begins this week with a new club, a a shift west for star import Robbie Fowler and continuing concerns over the competition’s financial viability and dwindling attendance.

Melbourne Heart is the new club in the expanded 11-team league. Brazilian striker Alex Terra and former Netherlands youth international Rutger Worm will lead the Heart against the Central Coast Mariners in Thursday’s season opener.

“After 10 months of being here and working together with all the people to build the club, it’s time to kick off,” said Heart coach John van’ t Schip, a Canadian-born former Dutch international.

Fowler, the ex-Liverpool and England striker, will have to wait an extra day to see his first action for the Perth Glory in Western Australia state. The Glory will take on Fowler’s old team—North Queensland Fury—in a match Friday at Perth.

Fowler will hope there are no acrimonious feelings on the field from his June decision to take legal action against his former club for damages over the termination of his playing contract.

He was one of seven Fury players whose contracts were terminated when North Queensland restructured earlier due to financial difficulties and its operations were taken over by Football Federation Australia. Fowler then signed a new deal with the Glory.

The players’ union took action against North Queensland on behalf of the seven players and reached settlements for all but Fowler. The amount sought by Fowler has not been disclosed.

“To Robbie’s credit, he could have gone and played in just about any country around the world and forgotten about the Fury situation,” union chief executive Brendan Schwab said. “But he is committed to developing the Australian game and ensuring contract security for Australian players.”

North Queensland wasn’t the only team hit by financial worries last year. Other Queensland state clubs Gold Coast United and Brisbane Roar also had concerns over attendance and costs, with Gold Coast owner Clive Palmer rumored to be pulling the financial plug on his team late last season.

In April, the A-League’s head of operations, Archie Fraser, resigned after only a year in charge. It came as the rumors of Palmer’s pullout continued and as the FFA took over control of North Queensland.

Palmer had earlier caused concern for the league when he restricted attendance at his team’s match against the Fury in a move to cut costs.

Palmer, a billionaire mining magnate, capped the crowd at the match to 5,000 by only opening one of four sides of the team’s 27,400-seat stadium on the Gold Coast. By limiting the crowd, the team was not required to pay a state government transport levy, and saved money on stadium staff.

The crowd restriction lasted only one match after the league and Palmer held talks to end the impasse.

Overall, average attendance was down by more than 2,000 in 2009-10 from 12,180 to 9,796. Although the addition of two new teams last year—North Queensland and Gold Coast—led to an increase in regular-season attendance from 1,023,147 to 1,322,475.

The potential for attendance increases this season won’t be helped by Australia’s poor showing at the World Cup in South Africa, where the Socceroos failed to advance past the first round.

It could get a late-season boost, however, if Australia manages to land the 2022 World Cup when FIFA decides the location on Dec. 2. The Australian domestic season ends in February.

In other first-round matches, Adelaide United hosts the Newcastle Jets on Friday and defending champion Sydney FC takes on the Melbourne Victory on Saturday in a replay of last year’s final. Gold Coast hosts Brisbane in an all-Queensland state opener Sunday.

The Wellington Phoenix, which has the first-round bye, opens at home against Gold Coast on Aug. 13.

The Phoenix were boosted late last week by the signing of Australia defender Jade North, who has played 28 matches for the Socceroos. North, who was born in Australia but who grew up in New Zealand, formerly played for Perth, Newcastle, Norwegian side Tromso and South Korea’s Incheon United.

“Jade is a proven performer at elite level, with almost 100 appearances in the A-League,” Wellington head coach Ricki Herbert said. “Not only does he have a wealth of experience but he also brings significant leadership qualities to the club.”

CARSON, Calif.—The Los Angeles Galaxy almost rallied back, but failed to do so till the very last minute in a 2-3 loss to the Chicago Fire in front of the 20,348 in the Home Depot Center.

Chicago opened up the match with three unanswered goals early in the first. LA turned on the heat after trailing and a sloppy Fire defense gave LA two penalty kick goals, but didn't cede enough to help LA draw.

First Half

A fast break for Chicago took an early lead. Four minutes into the game, Fire winger Marco Pappa set the net ablaze with a thunderous blast that blew past Galaxy keeper Donovan Ricketts. Pappa's goal set the tone for the backdraft to follow.

One minute later Chicago struck again. Forward Collins John surged from the midfield and past the defense on the right flank. Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez hit the turbo button but arrived one second too late as John went near post to double the lead.

The match recalled the Galaxy's 4-1 beating at the hands of the Puerto Rico Islander in Champions League play last Tuesday.

Nineteen minutes deep Chicago knocked in the insurance goal. The visitors were on the attack when Pappa received a pass in the box and took the shot. Ricketts made the diving parry, butdeflected it to the feet of midfielder Mike Banner who finished off both the chance and the game.

With Banner's goal in the 19th minute, the Fire became the first MLS club this season to score more than two goals on the Galaxy.

Los Angeles were in complete shambles, appearing lost and desperate to make something happen. Throughout the first half they had been out-muscled and outworked. They didn't get their first really opportunity until the 35th minute when defender Sean Franklin drove it in on the left and connected with Jovan Kirvoski in the area for a quick blast. The shot was off target, and Edson Buddle was one step too late to redirect it in.

LA's only goal in the first came from a penalty kick.

In the 37th minute, LA defender Todd Dunivant dribbled his way into the 18 but was grabbed and taken down by the Fire's Patrick Nyarko. Referee Silviu Petrescu booked the midfielder and granted the home team the PK.

Up to the plate stepped captain Landon Donovan, who beat goalie Sean Johnson easily. This goal marked Donovan's century in MLS play. However, it was a bittersweet milestone as his side was still trailing through 45 minutes of play.

TOKYO, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Japan’s new soccer supremo Junji Ogura will push to implement his predecessor’s radical plan for a European-style autumn-to-spring J-League season to help the national team.

Japan Football Association (JFA) president Ogura hopes to usher in the sweeping reform of the 18-team league, which normally runs from March to December, by 2015.

“This is something we really need to do…hopefully in the next five to 10 years if finances permit,” Ogura told the Asian Football Confederation’s website (www.the-afc.com).

“The FIFA calendar is very much European-oriented and if we don’t change our league calendar…it is the players, eventually the national team, who will suffer the most.”

An overhaul of the J-League’s calendar to mirror the European campaigns that run from August through to May would be a costly enterprise which would force clubs to invest in under-soil heating.

“Change is necessary if Japan wants to continue to be competitive on the international front,” said Ogura, who took over from Motoaki Inukai last month.

“Having said that, every change needs to be well planned as it will drastically affect the league as a whole.”

Clubs in the north of Japan with its freezing winters and heavy snowfall would be a major priority for the JFA in carrying out its bold plan.

“We need to (implement change) step by step, from north to south.” said the 71-year-old Ogura. “We need to start from Hokkaido, and then Yamagata, Niigata to Sendai and the list goes on.

“If we can get sponsors from the government or private sectors then we can start early. Any decision taken will be taken after deep consideration…between JFA and the J-League.”

MADRID, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Villarreal have signed World Cup-winning Spanish defender Carlos Marchena from La Liga rivals Valencia on a three-year contract.

“Villarreal and Valencia have reached an agreement under which Carlos Marchena will form part of the squad for the next three seasons,” Villarreal said on their website (www.villarrealcf.es).

The Sevilla-born 31-year-old, who can play as a centre back or defensive midfielder, played for Valencia for nine seasons, winning two league titles and one King’s Cup.

He has made 62 appearances for Spain, scoring two goals, and was part of coach Vicente del Bosque’s victorious squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Verbeek said before the World Cup, where the Socceroos failed to advance past the first round, that he would not continue with Australia and he instead took up a developmental coaching role with Morocco.

Berger is a former coach of the Netherlands Olympic team. He moved to Australia in November 2008.

SYDNEY, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Dutchman Han Berger will take charge of Australia for this month’s friendly against Slovenia, Football Federation Australia (FFA) said on Monday.

The Socceroos’ technical director has been promoted to the caretaker manager’s role while the FFA look to replace ex-coach Pim Verbeek, who left after this year’s World Cup in South Africa.

Australia take on fellow World Cup finalists Slovenia in Ljubljana on Aug. 11.

The 60-year-old Berger will be joined in the dugout in Slovenia by former Adelaide United manager Aurelio Vidmar in his first game since being appointed assistant coach.

Berger is scheduled to name his squad on Tuesday. (Reporting by Alastair Himmer in Tokyo. Editing by Patrick Johnston. To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback
