Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday in Germany to repair bilateral abdominal strains.
Team spokesman Lester Gretsch said the Canadian keeper should return to action 10-to-20 days after the procedure. Gretsch said Onstad flew overseas to meet with a doctor who specializes in the type of surgery the goalkeeper needs.
Onstad, the oldest active player in Major League Soccer, has missed three Superliga games and two MLS games due to the injury.
The 42-year-old from Vancouver is the league's career leader in goals against average (1.05). He topped MLS with 13 victories in 2009 and earned 10 shutouts.
Onstad has 57 caps for Canada.
