Don Garber has signed a contract extension that will keep him in his Major League Soccer commissioner role until 2014.

Commissioner since 1999, Garber previously worked for the NFL. In his decade at the helm of MLS, the 52-year-old has brought the league from the brink of contraction (the loss of both Florida clubs in 2002) to heavy expansion (Montreal will join as the league's 19th team in 2012), added a highly lucrative marketing arm in S.U.M., instituted the designated player rule, and overseen a push to add soccer-specific stadia across the United States.

“Don’s done a phenomenal job and we’re really proud of him,” Tim Leiweke, the CEO of AEG and chairman of MLS's board of governors, which negotiated Garber's contract, told the Sports Business Journal. “The momentum he's created here is phenomenal. We want to keep this going. I can't imagine anyone leading the charge but Don Garber.”

The Sports Business Journal understands Garber's contract could reach over $3 million a year with incentives and performance goals.

Though extension processes began over a year ago, Garber's deal was delayed until after the successful negotiation of a new collective bargaining agreement for the players, which was reached at the last moment following a deadline extension and a threat of strike by the players in June.

“My expectation is this is not the last time we'll negotiate with Don Garber,” Leiweke said. “He's like a good life insurance policy that builds up a significant cash value as time goes on.”
